How to start your own clothing line

Because fashion is something that I am passionate about, I have done a great amount of research on the topic. As I work on starting my own line, I've found a lot of helpful tips that I want to share with you as you take on this stressful venture.

You must have a concept

Once you decide that you are interested in starting your own line, creating a concept is the first thing you want to do. This will eliminate a lot of confusion and chaos later on. You need to know exactly what you want your clothing line to represent. Creating a concept includes picking your target audience as well as picking the style and the feel of your line. If you decide that you want to make a fun and flirty line for young adults, then that's what you stick to. It would be easier than just drawing a bunch of designs and trying to fit them together later. Pick your concept and pick a name for your line that relates to your concept.

Know what is out there

The last thing you want is to be accused of copying someone else's designs. That's a lawsuit waiting to happen! When you look at other's work, you are not looking for ideas for your own design. Instead, you are looking to see what has already been done and what you need to stay away from. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with getting inspiration from the work of others. However, there is a thin line between getting inspiration and copying someone else's work. You do not want your line to look like anyone else's. What do you think consumers are going to do? Buy the design from a designer that is known? Or buy the copy of the design from someone they have never heard of? You want something new, something personal, something that is totally you.

Network

It's just as important to network before you start your line as it is to network after your line is created. Attend fashion shows. You would not only meet other designers but you would also get to meet buyers and people interested in fashion. If you have a great personality and a great idea, you could easier create a buzz about yourself. Who knows, you could even meet someone who wants to sponsor you or invest in your company. If you have free time, you may also want to intern with another fashion designer so you can better understand the design process. If your budge allows it, take a class or two in fashion design to learn the basics of sewing and designing.

Start Drawing

After you have done your research and still believe that this is an industry you want to enter, it's time to start doing the hard work. The creating process is not as fun and easy as we would expect it to be but that's not a reason to give up. You may have all these great ideas but when it comes down to putting it on paper, you may not be able to put it together. You're going to have great days when you come up with five great designs and then you may have a whole week when you can't come up with anything. Give yourself a deadline but give yourself enough time. This is not a rush process and you don't want to put something out that looks sloppy. So draw when you are inspired and draw more than what you need. You are not going to love everything you draw so you need to have a lot to choose from. You may think something is great today and come back next week and absolutely hate it. Just know that this is normal. The last thing you want is to become uninspired.

Create

Once you have your drawings, it's time to bring your creations to life. Your budget defines how easily this process would go for you. If you do have a budget, you may be able to hire someone to create your pieces for you. However, if you do not have the funds and are doing this all on your own, you would have to create your own pieces. One thing you are going to have to invest in is a sewing machine. You can even start with a cheap one and once you're able, upgrade to a higher quality machine. You have to have physical pieces to show. Drawings are not going to be enough. You want to be able to put your pieces on someone so that you can demonstrate the fit and style. You may want to start out with at least ten full outfits. You may even want to start with cheaper fabrics if you are unable to afford the expensive stuff. You can always make the outfits in a better fabric later on. This is just to show what you envision your line to be so it does not have to be the finished product that you expect to be sold in stores.

Build your support system

There are going to be times when you doubt yourself so it is important to have a support system. This would most likely include your friends and family members. Once you have created your designs, you would want to get a response from people that have your best interest at heart. Maybe your mom wouldn't be the best person to ask if you have a mom that thinks that everything you do is genius. Ask your friends and family members that are brutally honest for their thoughts on your creations. As much as we say that we want to create things that we love, the truth of the matter is we want our items to be sold. If you're the only one that loves your designs, no one is going to purchase it. Hopefully you can get some position feedback that would encourage you to push on.

Promote yourself

There are many ways to promote your product. The first thing I would suggest is to get your designs entered into fashion shows. This is easier than you may think. There are always charity shows and other shows that are looking for fashion designers to show their work. Yes, you would be doing this for free but it is great publicity. Enter your work into as many fashion shows as you can. That way, other people can see your work and you would be able to get feedback from consumers. You may even want to sit in the audience to hear the honest reaction from strangers, if possible. There are always posts looking for designers on craigslist. That's a good place to start. You need to keep in mind that in the beginning of your career, you are not going to be making any money. This is why it is important to have a budget and save up for that budget before hand. Hopefully your designs would be so awesome that people would be interested in making purchases.

You also need to promote yourself online. You need to have a website for your line. There are many free websites out there that you can use to start. You may even want to use a blog such as blogger.com to show off your designs. You can find models and photographers online who are willing to work for free in other to build their portfolio and get pictures taken to put on your website. Once you have a website, invite people to visit it using social networks such as Twitter and Facebook. Your friends would be excited to check out your work and see what you have been working on. Put your work out there so that others can see it. Always be open to criticism because it would help you make your line better. Everyone is not going to like what you do but what you want is for a large percentage of your target audience to appreciate it.
Another way to promote your line is to wear your designs.

Wear your outfits out to dinners, parties, etc. so that others will get to see it. When someone compliments your outfit, it opens up a great opportunity for you to promote your line. If you don't want to wear your own designs, no one else is going to want to wear them. If none of your designs are appropriate for the place you plan on attending, you will be able to recognize what is missing in your line. Maybe your line was not intended for such occasions, but if it is, it's time to keep on drawing. If you are creating a line for an audience that you do not fit, you should try getting someone else to wear your clothing. It does not hurt to ask a friend to wear one of your outfits, especially if it's something they admire. Who wouldn't love to wear an original, one of a kind piece?

Once you get to this point, you would pretty much be on your way to success. You are going to get frustrated and it may take time for your line to get off the floor but if this is what you want, you need to stick to it. Keep networking and keep promoting yourself and hopefully, you will get to the place that you want to be in the fashion world. Good luck, from Jay Queen!
